I have always believed that one has to compete to reach their success. I believed that success was competition and that it had to be fought for. When defining competition, one tends to think of rivalry between people to reach a common goal or interest. However, this definition of competition is actually irrelevant to what success is. I believe that the keys to success are not fighting and competing with other people, but fighting for what you believe in, earning an honest living, and most importantly, helping and contributing to the benefit of others.
Succumbing to unethical or dishonest philosophies that cause one to abandon his or her own set of principles is a sure fire way to deviate from the path of success. Fighting for one’s beliefs is crucial to the path of success because it means that the individual can retain his or her freedom to be who they are. When people try to change to fit the standards of others, it can often lead to disaster because that person begins to feel unsure of his or herself, which in turn can hinder their journey to success. I am not saying that it is harmful or wrong to listen to advice, however, it could be harmful to change one’s entire persona and set of beliefs to fit others that he or she is not comfortable with. This is an essential tip that I adhere to now and it keeps me motivated to reach my goal of becoming a medical doctor. I am always open to advice and constructive criticism, but I try to keep in mind that this is my journey and I can heed to advice, but I must always be true to myself and my own beliefs first.
True success is found in one’s ability to be honest and pursue a career that he or she can be proud of. The best thing about this is that there are so many different career options for people that there’s no excuse to pursue careers that are deemed below the standards of the law. Earning an honest living is essential, not just to avoid the stress of dealing with law enforcement, but for self-satisfaction. The satisfaction that earning an honest living brings is so much better than the fruits of ill-gotten wealth because one can be more proud of their success.
A crucial part of one’s success is whether he or she is able to dedicate themselves to contributing to the well-being of others. The media portrays many celebrities and others that donate their time and money to the less fortunate, which is truly admirable and noble. No matter how many natural goods one acquires, it means absolutely nothing if that individual is not able to share the fruits of their success with others. I have found that there is extreme satisfaction in dedicating my time to people who are in need. This is one reason why I desire a career in medicine as a medical doctor. Doctors are blessed with the opportunity to be up close and personal with people, caring for them as well as building strong relationships with them. I feel like I was put on this Earth to help people and I think that a career in medicine will definitely help me achieve this goal.
In conclusion, success takes on different meanings to different people. However, in my opinion success is one’s ability to fight for their own beliefs, earn an honest living, and most importantly, help other people. These three aspects of success are what keep me motivated to reaching my dreams now, and in the future, God willing, I know these principles will be what I hold on to when I finally reach my career goal.
