Abortion is the termination of pregnancy and expulsion of a developing embryo or fetus. The debate surrounding abortion in the US has significantly intensified in recent years, with moral and legal considerations being constant battles in society. However, individuals are seeking abortions primarily due to their own recklessness, and I believe that abortion should not be legalized in our society because it is an act of killing that also harms women. Moreover, unborn babies have rights just like any other person, but unfortunately, they cannot defend themselves. There are many essays about why abortion should be illegal, and this one contends that the government should protect the unborn by not legalizing abortion.
Firstly, every individual has the right to life, and the fetus is an individual with the right to live. Therefore, abortion is an act of murder that violates this fundamental right. The right to life is more crucial than the right to control one's body in the case of abortion because the loss of a life is a greater loss than the loss of the right to control one's body for nine months. Thus, the right to life outweighs the right to control one's body, and abortion is morally wrong.
Furthermore, according to US Abortion statistics, over 100,000 abortions occur every year, with one abortion every 26 seconds and over one million abortions annually. Abortion is a cruel and inhumane practice that should never be promoted or legalized in our society. However, some people (Anti-Life or Pro-choice) may oppose my argument by claiming that the unborn are not individuals and do not have any human rights, which is merely an excuse to justify killing an innocent baby.
In addition, from the moment of conception, a pregnancy is formed when a sperm fertilizes an egg, and the unborn are fully living, genetically distinct, biologically self-coordinating autonomous individuals of the Homo sapiens species, i.e., human beings. Modern medicine, particularly embryology, is very clear about this. Unborn individuals at different stages may be smaller, weaker, less developed, more peculiar-looking, more vulnerable, and less sociable than other individuals, but this does not make them any less human. I believe that adoption is a better option than abortion. Condoms and other forms of contraception are readily available and affordable. Additionally, several programs in the US provide financial assistance to those who claim to be financially unable to raise a child.
Furthermore, rape is a common justification for those who support abortion. Although pregnancies resulting from rape victims are possible, it is rare for such pregnancies to occur in America. Despite the fact that I believe rape should be treated separately from abortion, rape is an act of violence, and abortion is an act of violence towards the unborn. I sympathize with those who become pregnant as a result of rape, but committing another act of violence will not solve the problem. An attacker takes a moment from their victim's life, while those who opt for abortion take the baby's entire life.
In conclusion, this argumentative essay demonstrates that abortion is an act of killing and should not be legalized in our society. People nowadays seek abortions primarily due to their own recklessness, but I oppose abortion because it is an act of killing that also harms women. Additionally, unborn babies have rights just like any other person, but unfortunately, they cannot defend themselves. Thus, the government should protect the unborn by not legalizing abortion. Adoption is a better alternative to killing innocent babies, and rape should be dealt with separately from abortion.
