Introduction

In order to keep a company alive and competitive in today’s world, new people must be hired. Sure, there are a lot of benefits that one can get from an employee base bonded by time and common experiences. However, in order to assimilate new knowledge about the world which the company operates in, there has to be new blood. However, companies do not hire based on whim alone. There are certain considerations that must be made in order for a company to entrust someone with its future. It is because of this that companies always conduct pre employment background checks.

Background checks

Background checks protect companies from the risk of unsafe working environments, negligent hiring, and from hiring the wrong kind of person for a job.

The first reason why background checks should be required for all companies is because of the potential risk of a person having a criminal record or even being a registered sex offender. In the article beyond the basic background check by Richard G. Brody he states; “the Philip Crosby Associates Inc. (PCA) hired a man John C. Nelson as a director of finance he had phenomenal credentials, Graduated with an MBA was a CPA, and had a great recommendation from his previous company, but Mr. Nelson was embezzling money from the company.” This is what companies have to protect themselves and their employees form because even though someone looks remarkable from, he outside doesn’t mean their intensions from there insides are good. Besides companies completing regular basic background checks companies should spend more time and money on impeccable background checks and other testing to make sure employee’s being hired are legit and there to better the company rather than steal and be untrustworthy to a company. When police officers are preparing in training to become officers they go through extensive training and testing being extensive background checks, lie detector test, drug testing, panel questioning, credit checks etc.… taking all these types of different test to companies and having them use these methods would weave out candidates that have negative intentions towards the company. Some of these methods would be and are considered invasive measures but a company has to protect them and there employees, and if that means taking a look at a credit report, or giving a polygraph why not other people in different careers have to partake in these invasive test to, if that is what betters the work environment and companies then why prohibit the use of polygraphs and other testing.

If companies administer background checks the correct way, companies could save more time, and money while hiring the right fit for the job rather than firing and hiring constantly. Companies should give out honesty/integrity test. Honesty tests are written psychological test designed to identify job applicants who have high propensities to steal money or property on the job. In Spokane Washington 30-year old Morgan Heath was released into the community a man convicted at the age 14 for sexually assaulting a 2-year old girl. He has many other sexual assault charges also that got him to be housed at McNeil island, as of 2019 he has a 36% change of being convicted of another sex offence within five years according to a doctor that administered Heath risk assessments. Morgan Heath stated “He plans to consider working at a grocery store deli or an entry-level job at Denny’s restaurant. Everyone should have some sort of redemption at life to better themselves, but when it comes to someone unpredictable that is working around children, young girls, and young boys and babies should have no sorts of chance at all at any company. He would like to work at Denny’s or a grocery store deli but children, and families are in those environments every day and no one once convicted of any crime harming anyone in heinous ways should be able to work around an environment that is frequented by families and children, that puts everyone walking in and out of that establishment in danger. If the company, he attempts to get hired in should perform an adequate extensive background check and his background should come up and that should detour each company to not hire him in that kind of family environment. This goes for any and every company, no company or small business should push any background check under the rug because they are in need to help to run the company. Everyone shouldn’t be allowed to enter your dwelling just because they seem or like a nice, great person everyone should receive background checks because anyone is capable of doing anything.

Finally, background checks provide security safety for companies, the employees working for the company, and clients of the company from potential danger. Theft, workplace violence, and workplace fraud. Different types of background checks shouldn’t be held back based on the type of person. Some companies or agencies might only administer a background check and not a criminal background check, some might not even pull a credit history. This should be expected for everyone no matter your race, religion, creed etc. Everyone should be administered the same test whether hits come back on the criminal background or the credit history or not. Its best to find out anything you can about a person before they are officially hired rather than have pop up incidents you weren’t expecting form the person you just hired and are paying to work at your business. The background test and other test to prove this candidate is the right fit should all be done before an employer even offers the candidate the job, the manger or employer should know the most they can about a candidate before offering a position because this eliminates the firing process and the loss of money. If more time were spent on the hiring process making sure each candidate walking to that door is up to par and up to company standards will eliminate people from constantly being fired. This can also help the employee when it comes to moving up rank in a company. When companies pull different types of test on candidates they will see and learn way more about that one person trying to obtain that specific job a credit report a company pulls on a potential employee can tell a lot about an employee just form a credit report. Some reports and test can make or break a candidate like in the police force they pull credit reports on officers before they can become law enforcement officers to make sure that they are living a life of abiding laws and being able to handle adult situations in life, being able to pay bills, handle money, carry yourself in a dependable trustworthy way is what many different test show employers and companies, so if companies spend more time and money into background checks, polygraphs, criminal checks, drug test etc. less candidates would be fired and that’s more many saved rather than wasted.

In conclusion background checks should be required for all companies because not everyone is trustworthy enough to have working in your company, there are many people in this world looking for the easy way out to get ahead in life and the only way those types of people get by in life is if they are allowed to get by, treating everyone the same when it comes to the hiring process is key to hiring the right person for a job, the person you might have went easy on while hiring them could be the one that turns around and embezzles money form the company, or sexually assaults an employee or customer in the bathroom where no cameras are, you must watch and be vigilant about everyone that comes in your presences because you never know there intensions, sticking to the strict protocol for the hiring process will weave out bad candidates. Preforming polygraph’s, drug test, background checks, criminal backgrounds checks, credit histories, etc. are far from invasive they are a form of protection and safety that every company should invest in and spend more time and money upgrading and exceling to keep any dangerous person from working and putting a company and employees in danger.
