In modern society we think of schools as co-ed (meaning both sexes). Some however think it’s time for a change, single sex schools. While single sex schools may be good for some instance I am personally against it, as there is no definitive proof it helps students and in some cases it may hurt them .
Same sex schools harm students academic and real world success. One such example is of this is when “A 2011 study published in Science for example, found that children who attend` single-sex schools are more likely to believe gender stereotypes than students who don’t”(source 1)! Gender stereotyping may mislead children to think things about all girls that aren’t true such as girls are weak and boys are strong etc. This mentality of thinking does not go over well in the real world and may increase tensions with the other gender. In the real world single-sex education is not beneficial as “Students in single-sex classrooms will one day live and work with members of the opposite sex…” (source 3) This means that students don’t get an opportunity to interact with the opposite sex prior to work which might make working with them awkward. If the two genders cannot cooperate together they will be unable to marry and raise children which would have a significant effect on society as a whole. Sending children to same-sex schools may sound like a good idea but be aware of the long term repercussions both academically and in the real world.
You don’t need to send your kids to a same-sex school to have them thrive. As stated in a report by the American Association of University Women, “when elements of a good education are present- such as small classes and schools, equitable teaching practices and focused education curriculum-girls and boys succeed. “(source 2) T As long as one gender isn’t preferred by a teacher over the other and the school follows a good curriculum co-ed education can be just as effective. Another factor is that most same-sex schools are privatized meaning they don’t use the same curriculum as a public school or are being funded by the government through taxpayers.so they poess complete control of themselves. that may indicate that gender has no impact. Public school teachers may also favor one gender over the other, observers noted that “Boys[blurted] out eight times as often as girls did when a boy [blurted] out the teacher ignored the raise your hand rule and usually praised his contribution. Girls who [blurted] out got reminders to raise their hands.”.(source 2) If teachers didn’t discriminate between genders then that would render same-sex schools obsolete. Non discrimination helps keep girls self esteem high which is important at any age and enables the girl to have the best performance in school. In summary, depending on if discrimination is present, a public or private co-ed school may be just as effective as a same-sex school.
To conclude same-sex education as opposed to co-ed may harm your childrens future, both academically and socially and may make no different academic impact then a co-ed public or private school , when all factors are considered and no discrimination is present. So the next time you decide to enroll your kid in a same-sex school think carefully and double check the facts. After all you may be putting your childs future on the line!
