Eating habits are an integral part of human life, as they directly impact our physical health, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life. As an individual, my eating habits have evolved over the years due to various factors such as cultural influences, social experiences, and personal preferences. In this autoethnography, I will critically examine my eating habits, exploring the cultural, social, and personal factors that have shaped my relationship with food.
One of the most significant factors that have influenced my eating habits is my cultural background. Coming from a family with a rich culinary tradition, I have been exposed to a wide variety of traditional dishes and cooking practices. My cultural upbringing has instilled in me a deep appreciation for home-cooked meals and the importance of sharing food as a means of strengthening familial bonds.
According to research conducted by Arredondo et al. (2017), cultural influences play a crucial role in shaping individuals' eating habits, as they dictate the types of foods consumed, mealtime practices, and dietary preferences. Growing up in a household that prioritized traditional cuisine, I developed a preference for homemade meals over fast food or processed snacks. This cultural influence has significantly impacted my dietary choices, leading me to prioritize fresh, whole foods in my daily meals.
