In this essay, I am going to analyse the relation between “I” and God two concepts from Descartes’s book A Discourse on the Method. People of his time in France would never have dared to say that “I” come before god, because they thought that god should not be doubtable. Even though, he started doubting everything, at first he does say that god exists. However, he does not say that god is undoubtable truth. Therefore, this is showed that he proves “I” first. The big aim or big question that he had in this book was how he can prove to himself that “I” exists or reality exists. According to him, “I” does not mean person, “I” means the thinking ability that exists and is connected to personality. Moreover, he also said that “I” is soul, and the soul does not mean that he has a body or that he can trust everything. He proves his existence first, because “I” was unshakable when he followed his method.
He basically starts doubting to everything and Descartes the method to make up logic that would help Descartes' to take an unshakable decision. The first method is about the operation of the thought, don't jump to conclusions because at the one view can't say that to be right or false. There is no doubt on the truth, but there will be possibility to doubt because things from inside an outside they are not same and it is not easy to judge. On his judgment, thought everything is doubtable. Moreover, Descartes' observed what are the unit of the thought, then he breaks the question into smaller questions and starts from the simplest to understand the object, in order to reach the most complex. Subsequently, Descartes' considered the different relation finding what is the object in order to understand unit, that we can understand sample unite then slowly he can come to know what unit that there won't be any doubt. Afterwards, he said that he cannot believe anything in reality, how can I know what I see? What I hear? What I think is true or is this reality or dream? Can I ever know anything?
Descartes' was really doubting everything even wondered whether the person who sat next to him is real or not as well as doubting himself. In addition, he doubts that is there any haven on the earth or god. Everything is unshakable how can I prove to “I” exist and the truth exist. In addition, Descartes' said that thoughts have truth reality and they are metaphysical. At the beginning nothing comes from nothing there should be someone exist that create the whole scene of nature. Secondly, the pursuit of the truth that more perfect could not come from less. Descartes proved that if there is this doubt or if there are this question, so there is also something should be there that he is thinking about the question. So “I” is the only ability to think about question. Finally, “he decided after that to look for other truth” and “any geometric proof that god, who is the perfect being is or exist”.
Descartes proved that he is imperfect and he thinks about the idea of more perfect. In this book he said that, “So that there remained only the possibility that it had been put to me by the nature which is truly more perfect than mine, and one which even had in itself all the perfections of which I could have any idea, that to say, in a word which is God”. Furthermore, Descartes found that he is not perfect, then the object of more perfect and that's why there must be something more perfect exist who created him and gave him an idea to think about more perfect being. (p.30). Subsequently, Descartes' added that “I” is not perfect and there must be something more perfect upon whom he depends. There must be something who is independent who has the ability to create us. He gave his own example that he could not overcome it, if he were his own creator.
Descartes' could see doubt in the idea to give all type of perfection because the world, bodies, imagination and other nature is not perfect. Everything is God power, without God it is impossible to continue a single moment. The truth that he is less perfect shows him that he could not overcome his own existence. The only perfect thing is God, that must exist and must have create him, given him body and thought.
Descartes' proves first his existence, and the soul by which he exists that soul able to be doubt and not perfect. That’s why, perfection must exist because he exists and he could have thought about more perfection, someone super perfect exist which proves God's existence.
