In this essay I want to discuss the effects of drugs on community Decatur, Illinois, as the problem of drug abuse has reached alarming proportions, posing a significant threat to our community's well-being. The prevalence of substances like heroin, crack cocaine, powder cocaine, prescription opioids, marijuana, and methamphetamine has reached epidemic levels in our small city. While some may perceive drug addiction as a choice, it is crucial to understand that addiction is a complex disorder that affects an individual's brain and behavior. According to the Mayo Clinic, drug addiction is a substance abuse disorder, leading to an inability to control the use of drugs or medications, whether legal or illegal. The current efforts of the Macon County State's Attorney's Office, primarily focused on prosecuting drug dealers, are essential but insufficient to address the multifaceted issue of drug abuse. To combat this problem effectively, we must understand that drug addicts are not solely responsible for their addiction. Instead, they often find themselves trapped in a cycle of dependency, requiring a more comprehensive approach that targets drug dealers and provides addicts with the help they need.

The Unit's focus on pursuing drug dealers rather than users is a strategic choice rooted in the understanding that addiction often robs individuals of their capacity for rational decision-making.
