With advance in medical science, the use of salt has also gone down. Most of the salt manufacturers have started putting big stickers on their packets – LOW SODIUM. But why? What have scientists found that is leading to such changes in our diet? The reason is that too much sodium puts our heart at dire risk. Less sodium keeps the blood pressure in check and hence reduces chances of heart issues like heart attacks or cardiac arrests. Low sodium has also proven beneficial in preventing strokes, kidney issues and osteoporosis. In fact, low sodium is known to calm nerves and steel muscles as well.

  1. >Fresh or frozen veggies
  2. The sodium content of fresh vegetables is definitely low but make sure you do not add salt or sauce. You might steam it for the best benefits. Broccoli and sprouts have least sodium and maximum nutrition. You must stay away from canned veggies.

  3. Potatoes
  4. Low in sodium and high in potassium, potato is a wonder veggie. Just do not fry it and destroy the qualities.

  5. Nuts
  6. Full of protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids and negligible sodium. Nuts are the most easily available food which is 100% heart healthy. And what is more, you can snack on them at your desk during work!

  7. Apples
  8. Low sodium and high dietary fiber. An apple a day keeps the doctor away might not be wrong if you think about it!

    You are good to go as long as these are not canned.

  9. Yoghurt
  10. For something you can easily make at home, yogurt can do wonders! Its mindboggling nutritional statistics will leave your jaw open. Not only is it rich in protein, potassium and calcium, it has Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Vitamin E and even Vitamin k. Need I say more?

  11. Quinoa
  12. Must have heard about the “quinoa boomr ecently? Wondered how this crop became super crop all of a sudden? It is gluten free and rich in minerals like manganese, phosphorous and iron.

  13. Oats
  14. Protein, dietary fiber and lots of Vitamin B. Your breakfast is sorted! It has beta glucans which lowers blood cholesterol and clubbed with low sodium, these greatly reduces heart risk.

  15. Fresh salmon
  16. Omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin B, Vitamin D and truckloads of protein. Need I say more guys? It is also recommended for cancer prevention. Just make sure it is not farmed. And on top of that, 50 mg per 3 ounces, isn’t that just great!

  17. Goat cheese
  18. 40 mg maximum in an ounce guys! It is time you throw out your mayonnaise and use this as your salad dressing!

  19. Avocados
  20. An intermediate size avocado contains a maximum of 20 milligram sodium. With its high fatty acid and low sodium and cholesterol content, this fruit has taken the market by storm. Every second person is showing off their avocado smoothie! On a serious note, it prevents two biggies- cancer and diabetes.
