Firstly, one stressful aspect of teenage life is academic pressure. Youngsters are forced to remain in education until 16 then they can go their own path if they choose to. They need to remain in school to make the best of their education. In S4 students have to take exams that will make their futures better. It was revealed that 1,000 students were taking up counselling sessions due to stress for the exams. The students told the councillors they were worried about their exam results and how they thought their parents would react to the results. Peter Wanless, NSPCC chief executive, stated: “Waiting for exam results can be an anxious time for young people and can leave some struggling to cope. Pressure to achieve good grades and worries about securing further education places and jobs can be too much for some teenagers to deal with on their own.” This makes it difficult for students to focus on school work and for the exams, they will sit. It additionally demonstrates parents being included. Parents usually want what is best for their children but they also care for them. Students are simply expected to walk into exam halls and be able to know everything in a click of a finger but in reality, they have to think and attempt to recollect what they revised for. That is what makes it difficult for pupils to sit exams. The stress of attempting to remember everything can likewise influence them to have a panic attack or they could just be overlooked due to the weight they are under to sit them.

Another aspect is young people are being put under pressure. They are influenced to look a specific way that society wants. Photoshopping is a major thing these days. We don’t understand the backstory or why individuals use photoshop. You may just look at a photo and think it is natural characteristics or they have worked for that body, that is a flawless look. For the majority, they give individuals impossible thoughts and desires. ‘During our focus group conversations, we learned that young people don’t think about nutrition when it comes to eating,’ María Len-Ríos, an associate professor of strategic communication stated, ‘They think more about calorie-counting, which isn’t necessarily related to a balanced diet.’ 35% of girls aged 11-12 from 1000 young people from Girlguiding said that they compare themselves and their lives with different other girls. Ruth Marvel, deputy chief executive of Girlguiding, said girls had spoken of the “increasing pressure to live the ‘perfect’ life online and the negative impact this is having on their wellbeing”, adding: “We need to listen and take girls’ voices seriously to protect their happiness, wellbeing and opportunities in life, both online and offline.”

Social media is a major issue. These days individuals would like to have an “ideal” body. Regularly we are contrasting our lives and looks with supermodels or celebrities. On social media you can just observe what has appeared on a screen yet you don’t recognize what is behind the camera. We don’t see that models can get photoshopped and we attempt to achieve something that isn’t genuine. A college student named Madison Holleran committed suicide, even though her Instagram feed did not show any signs of her suffering from severe depression. You typically think what you see on social media is true so you attempt and achieve your goal of what you would be expected to be viewed as. People give fake ideas about what is genuine or what is unrealistic. This can lead to mental illnesses. Is this truly the world we need to live in? Do we want to be judged on everything?

Additionally, due to stress and pressure on youngsters, social media can influence young people to take their lives as they could be unhappy about feeling judged about their appearances. There were 29 deaths in 10 to 19-year-olds in 2015-16, compared with 14 during 2013-14. That is an expansion of 107%. Dr Maxim de Sauma, the chief executive of Brent Centre for Young People, which supports more than 600 young people with mental health issues each year, said: “When young people with crippling or disabling mental health conditions are not given the support they need, it wastes lives.” Pressure can likewise encourage smoking as people thinks it helps them to deal with the stress. Smoking can also lead to lung cancer which can lead to death.

However, pressure is a normal part of life and nearly everybody will encounter some sort of pressure or struggle in their daily life. Sometimes putting someone under pressure can influence them to accomplish more and can help to make them achieve greater things and help boost their knowledge. Stress can also help you get tasks done well and it also can help by boosting memory. But putting too much pressure on yourself and on others can be very dangerous, everyone has to think before they speak or do because it can affect other people in good or bad ways. There are some good aspects of pressure as it can help you become a better person depending on the situation and depending on how you handle the situation.

In conclusion, the way society is now is why young people are under pressure and believe they are not good enough appearance-wise and knowledge-wise. The impacts of pressure could be life-changing depending on the situation. Just because adults think that their children need to pursue an education it does not mean their mental state is fine. Stress and pressure can get to their head and can influence not just the young person but it can also affect the parents also. I think we can help young people cope with feeling pressure, the way they look and act by discussing how it impacts them. I recommend they should go get a counsellor or have someone to talk to about this.
