My Intent to Participate in Master’s Program in Civil Engineering

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn”, wise words from author Alvin Toffler. The true worth of an individual is gauged by the depth of his knowledge and his ability to learn, unlearn and relearn. My father, an ex-banker, enrolled for a degree in law at the age of 60, the week he retired from service. It helped him augment his already vast knowledge besides keeping his memory sharp and active. He went on to be a consultant in banking law for law firms. I did encounter temporary setbacks during the initial days of my academics. However, it was my father’s inspirational example that it’s never too late, which encouraged me to engineer a turnaround in my life, complete my degree and pursue my career as a civil engineer. I was determined to seek a master’s degree in my field from a top rung university, to enable me to scale better heights in my career. The master’s degree program in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on infrastructure planning at UCL was the answer to my quest for an ideal post-graduation. I am solemnly aware of the stiff competition I will inevitably be faced with to secure a place in this highly respected institution.

Nevertheless, my rich and varied experience in the field and my ability to turn around unfavourable situations tenaciously till I succeed, all testify my aptness as a worthy candidate for your program. I aspire to hold a senior management position in a company specializing in infrastructure consultancy and use the experience thus gathered, as a building block to set up a self-owned Infrastructure consultancy. The Indian economy, one of the fastest growing economies today is in its transition phase. Smart cities are being created and the ageing infrastructure facilities are being modernized on a large scale. I intend to use my knowledge and experience to contribute to the growth of the country. I have an inquisitive blend of mind which refuses to accept without digging into the grave of the matter. My colleagues and superiors appreciate my commitment to work, my design choices, my array of research before finalizing a design, my ability to put forth my views in a lucid manner with acceptance by a majority, my ability to identify problems and find a solution through a logical and consistent approach.

What piques my interest to venture in the field of infrastructure planning is my travels to different countries in the Middle East and where I was able to witness the impact of planned development on these modern cities. Working as a civil engineer in one of the premier group in Oman, I had the unique opportunity to be in charge of our division’s maintenance and construction operations. I have been involved in the management, quality control and quality audit of multimillion-dollar projects for my group, in addition to being the technical resource of my company representing the group at various presentations. I have designed, estimated, constructed and completed projects of diverse nature, be it an industrial kitchen to cater to 800 workers of our group or redesign a three decade old villa to incorporate some of the most modern technologies prevalent today.

My practical experience as a civil engineer coupled with my ability to learn, unlearn and relearn with ease makes me viable for candidature in your master’s program in Civil Engineering. My masters at UCL will help me develop a better my knowledge on the subject as well as substantiate my stature as an engineer of calibre. With the knowledge and experience of the faculty, I believe I can use it to achieve my goals in graduate study and my career.
