Starting my A level in economics by learning things such as the power of money and how the government tries to control the actions of people through fiscal changes, sparked a sudden interest to me regarding the world of finance. Not only was it a completely new science to me but also a completely new language. The reason the course of Accounting & Finance appeals to me so greatly would be is due to the vast number of prospects available for graduates, as well as possibly having a year to study abroad for a selected few universities.
This would be an amazing opportunity as it would give me exposure overseas and further subsides my aspirations to possibly work abroad in the future. To gain experience in working abroad I approached an entrepreneur named Sergei Kim in Moscow who is the owner of both the “Roll Biri” and “Three samurai” sushi bar franchises. We toured parts of Russia including Dmitrov and Vidnoye. The aim was for me to understand what factors are sought after when opening a new outlet as well as how the business was structured. Active as a personal assistant I believe the enrichment it gave me was immeasurable, gaining the insight on how a Korean who migrated to Western Russia came to be a successful businessman. Sergei and I kept in touch meeting up in London last August to discuss the possibility of opening outlets in the UK. I believe through this I have demonstrated independence, trust and initiative. Having been numerically tested in maths daily, I am able to understand statistical data and can see which models they may be tailored to and correlate with. This is particularly useful when attempting to comprehend information in economics.
Currently studying the ‘J curve’ and how the depreciation of currency affects both imports and exports of local goods, I have been able to use my analytical skills and graphical skills from Maths to further extend my understanding of real-world economic models. I can quickly grasp new theories and concepts in lessons and am excited at seeing them applied in current world problems. This intrigues me and helps me appreciate the concepts I am studying to a further extent rather than seeing them as equations or formulas which I plug numbers into. Studying Russian has sparked a fascination in me towards the global economy and allowed me to see how cultural differences also determine the price and income elasticity of certain goods and services. Using systematic approaches further developed my skills of problem solving as well as rationality. Russian is also a language I would further be interested in exploring at University, since it will help me communicate with Russian speaking family members and may even offer further prospects for future career choices. I have been brought up in a six-child family by a single mother and so the world of chaos has always been a familiar one. Consequently, I have also taken on great responsibility and been able to condition myself well to high stress environments. I am committed and willing to try new things. An example of this would be this year’s school performance ‘The Sound of Music’, in which I took on the lead male role despite not having any acting experience. Finding the balance between rehearsals near performance date and my AS exams proved challenging to say the least.
Additionally, I took on the role of ‘Sales/Marketing Director’ in Young Enterprise which further benefitted my public speaking and communication skills, as well as giving me an insight in how to promote products and the consumer reception of different promotions. Through taking part in weekly business meetings my teamwork skills improved as well as my appreciation for other opinions. I able to independently come up with several key marketing schemes. As a conscientious and dedicated student who is willing to further prosper academically in hopes of gaining experience, enrichment and greater adaptability. I believe a degree from a carefully selected university tailored to suit me will be the next step for my journey.
