Pollution, a simple word which is hunting down the world with its intricating web. Last year, 14 billion pounds (6B Kg.) of garbage was dumped into the ocean. Most of it is plastic. Americans make up 5% of the world's population, and yet, produce 30% of the world's waste and use 25% of the world's resources. An overwhelming majority of the world's population breathes polluted air, according to a new report from State of Global Air. And this does not end here, for every 1 million tons of oil shipped, about 1 ton is spilt and causes fish to suffocate and die. More than that, a child dies every 8 seconds from contaminated water. All these and yet, we are sitting idly wasting more and murdering the earth. The worst part is, we do not feel remorse and we do not do anything. Many disposable plastics are made from polypropylene - a thermoplastic polymer which is made from the same stuff that powers our cars. That's right, much of the plastics that are used every day are made from fossil fuels! We all know that the use of fossil fuels contributes to greenhouse gasses and climate change. Well, it is vital to preserve our environment and make sure our children and grandchildren have a healthy and stable planet to inherit in the future. Listed below are some products for daily use which will at least lessen the danger on earth's health:
Bamboo Toothbrush: One of the simplest ways to reduce pollution is to switch your toothbrush to something more convenient to the earth. “The amount of plastic-to-sand ratio at Kamilo Beach (in Hawaii) is shocking, even to me,” says artist Sophie Thomas. “In my half hour walk along the coastline, I picked up 18 toothbrushes alone.” Over 99% of the plastic in the toothbrush cannot be recycled, hence, increases the pollution to a greater degree. Switching to a bamboo toothbrush, you'll not only save the earth but also, you are adding up more style to it.
Stainless Steel Thermos Bottle Coffee Mug: Have you ever wondered what happens to that disposable coffee cup, once you're done with your coffee? The plastic lining that makes them waterproof is the leading cause of pollution because they cannot be recycled. Each year over 500 billion single-use coffee cups are used and thrown away around the globe. Only 1 per 400 cups gets recycled, and about 200 litres of water are used in the production of one disposable coffee cup. And the most horrifying part? Since you started reading this article almost 100.000 cups are gone to the landfill only to sit there and not being recycled because of the thin plastic sheet.
Reusable Bamboo Fiber Coffee Cups: Because Bamboo is very organic and degradable, reusable bamboo fibre coffee cup is a must to your tableware. It is safe and non-toxic, not easy to burn or wear out and most importantly, from nature and back to nature. A great benefit of using bamboo as the organic base for bio-plastic fibres is that there is no need for pesticides or fertilisers when growing bamboo. This allows a natural eco-system of insects, birds and small animals to exist in harmony. Coffee cups, worldwide are creating a havoc in nature with its non-recyclable elements and with reusable bamboo fibre coffee clubs, you can start a revolution.
Stainless Steel Drinking Straws: BPA is a harmful chemical found in plastics that mimic the activity of hormones, most commonly estrogen, which can lead to a number of reproductive disorders and other conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease. Plus, just imagine, if a single person were to use a plastic straw every day for the next ten years, there would be 3,650 straws worth of landfill! It is thus imperative you switch to reusable items and recycle plastic items as much as possible. With over 500 million plastic straws being used every day in the US alone, it's no wonder that many of them end up in our oceans and waterways. By switching to using reusable straws we can drastically reduce the number of disposable straws that are made, used and then thrown away. And I know that buying cheap, throwaway items can seem like a cost-effective choice at first glance but however the cost of replacing these disposable items regularly quickly start to add up. Reusable stainless steel straws are just that – reusable!
Bamboo Straw Reusable: Bamboo is a grass species that can grow up to a metre a week. When harvested, it re-shoots from its extensive root system and does not require replanting. Moreover, bamboo is like a natural filter that lets you enjoy smooth, refreshing beverages free of the chemical, paper or plastic taste and also, become the trendsetter. And there’s just something about bamboo straws that makes drinking tad bit more fun, not to mention the fact that dentists recommend them for protecting your teeth against decay and staining as sugary drinks are sucked past the teeth.
Wooden Cotton Buds: We have all seen the photograph of a seahorse holding a plastic bud on the sea, here's something you should know about the most beautiful photograph ever taken. “It’s a photo that I wish didn’t exist but now that it does I want everyone to see it”, Justin Hofman, photographer, wrote on Instagram. “What started as an opportunity to photograph a cute little seahorse turned into one of frustration and sadness as the incoming tide brought with it countless pieces of trash and sewage. This photo serves as an allegory for the current and future state of our oceans.” Cotton buds are one of 10 reasons why the oceans are polluted with plastic. And the organic bamboo cotton buds are 100% biodegradable. The eco cotton buds come in a come in a recycled paper box. Other than that, this eco-friendly option is a great alternative to polluting plastic cotton swabs.
Reusable Grocery Tote Bags: It is estimated to take between 15 and 1,000 years for the average plastic bag to decompose, depending upon the type of environment. A typical landfill environment causes the plastic bags to just sit for decades or centuries with a minimal breakdown. Moreover, up to 1 million birds, 100,000 turtles and many other sea animals die annually from taking in plastic bags. Animals can confuse floating bags with sea life to eat, such as plankton and jellyfish. Once they eat it, the plastic clogs up their digestive tract. The animals typically starve to death. Other animals may drown after they are entangled in plastic bags. Reusable grocery tote bags are not only eco-friendly, it is also cost effective and easy to carry. Also, here's a quick tip, if you are a business, you can put your logo and contact information on custom reusable shopping bags. This is an effective marketing technique because customers typically have these bags for years. The more reusable bags you purchase, the lower the price per item. So it can be a very effective marketing campaign from a cost perspective. Also, reusable shopping bags are even making waves a fashion accessory, with plenty of different designs and aesthetics to keep you looking stylish.
