Society, when viewed from a closer perspective, is coarse. This means that it is composed of different types of individuals, each with different strengths and weaknesses, abilities, talents, skills, and intelligence. It’s just like looking into a microscope with grains rice as a specimen. You will notice the difference in size, shape, and color with the help of a microscope. But without it, it’ll just be indistinguishable. It’s the same with society. Rather than viewing it as a whole, which appears to be homogenous, society can make something out of an individual, but only with the help of someone who can see an individual’s talents and cultivate it, in order for that individual to utilize it and contribute to society.
When we talk about society, it can’t function without diverse individuals. Every role of every individual is important to maintain a balance in society. But when asked if which individual contributes the most, it should be none other than a teacher. A teacher whose role is to guide, educate, and help a certain individual to realize and reach his dreams. Henry Brooks Adams, a historian, a writer, and a teacher, once said, “Teachers affect eternity; no one can tell where their influence stops.”
In our lives, at a very young age, we were already introduced to a teacher. As far as their job is concerned, they go out of their way to help us learn. They don’t only educate us by teaching the concepts that should be learned in school, but they also teach us the way of life and how to live with meaning. They tell us stories no one could ever imagine. We were taught what is right from wrong. We were inspired and capacitated by them. Without them, it is not possible for our dreams to be realized and to be made a reality. And that alone is worth more than what they are paid.
When a student is asked what they want to be when they grow up, and it happens that he wants to be a teacher, the other person snickers and regards it as, “just a teacher.” And they’ll begin to ask more things like: Why not a lawyer? Or an engineer? Or a doctor?
Sure, all of those things sound nice. A lawyer can defend the innocent. An engineer can build homes. A doctor can save lives. But a teacher? A teacher can cultivate a life that is worth living.
People often look down on teaching as a profession. They forget that it is them who help us become the person we want to be. To some people, being a teacher may not be as appealing as any other profession. These are the type of people who fail to realize the heart and dedication it takes to educate an individual. Without a teacher, there won’t be any lawyers to defend the innocent, engineers to build homes, and doctors to save lives. Society would end before it starts. So even if your teacher appears to be strict and inconsiderate, try to appreciate them a little and look from another perspective.
