YesterdayLand aims to be a major electronic dance music festival that provides a memorable experience to their attendees, and thus, are in need of a venue that is climate-appropriate, so festivalgoers aren’t confronted by weather problems, and that can accommodate for inevitable inclement weather. Piedmont Park, situated in the heart of Atlanta, is the ideal venue for YesterdayLand. Atlanta, like many cities within the United States, experience freezing weather during the winter and sweltering hot during the summers. However, the spring and fall seasons provide a model and quintessential weather type for large-volume festivals such as YesterdayLand. According to the National Weather Service, Atlanta undergoes a considerably less amount of rainfall during the spring months than any other month. For instance, in March, Atlanta only experienced 2.68% of their annual rainfall within 2017[1]. Spring and fall seasons being the usual festival months, Piedmont Park presents an advantage in being a site that gives both an outdoor and an indoor experience, while promising minimal rainfall so technical difficulties can be minimized, and attendees can enjoy the festival to the ultimate extent.
Additionally, Piedmont Park is an enormous, 185-acre site that consists of four separate venues within it that can accommodate a large-volume of people in the case of inclement weather; these venues are the Dockside, the Magnolia Hall, Greystone, and Promenade Lawn[2]. Although all the venues within Piedmont Park will be useful for YesterdayLand, Promenade Lawn proves to be especially serviceable in ensuring that festivalgoers don’t encounter unfavorable weather incidents while still delivering the full experience YesterdayLand aims to offer. Promenade Lawn, with its 41,000-square foot outdoor space, is exceedingly suitable for the building of various tents and roofed structures[3]. These tents and roofed structures could be used as sitting areas, rest areas, VIP areas, or yet another place for a stage so artists can perform, and festivalgoers can have more of a variety. Most importantly, festivalgoers will be able to access these tents and roofed structures in the case on unfavorable inclement weather that happens to be inevitable.
It’s critical to have fitting weather for a festival so attendees aren’t discouraged to go, and technology failures aren’t experienced. A large variety of cities and the venues within them have failed to be ideal locations for venues; for example, Levitation Festival in Austin[4], Hangout Music Festival in Alabama[5], and Lollapalooza in Chicago[6], are among many of the festivals that have been cancelled or substantially delayed due to climate conditions. Thankfully, Atlanta has constant promising weather conditions within the spring and fall seasons that are between a favorable 62 – 73 degrees Celsius.
As can be seen, Piedmont Park delivers an appropriate platform for Virgin Group to launch YesterdayLand as a successful EDM music festival without being confronted by extreme weather issues. The most extreme Piedmont Park has experienced in weather has been the rainfall within Atlanta, which can be easily accommodated through the installation of tents and roofed structures.
