Sexism has existed for many years and it might never come to an end. Back in 1778, women struggled with high tariffs and were easily brainwashed into paying them. Nowadays the gender wage is even more severe since women are getting taxed for buying products that are a necessity. Men should pay taxes just like women do so our economy would have equal contribution. Our gender shouldn’t affect the amount of money we give for taxes or how much money we receive back.
A pharmacy in New York made an “experiment” to test how men reacted when they would see the sign that said only men were being taxed. Their reaction as expected were understandable. They did not like the idea o being taxed more and even called it “unfair. ” According to Jolie Alony, this sign purpose was to open people’s eyes and see what woman go through. Alony even quoted, “this is to raise awareness about gender discrimination. ” Women in many countries get taxed more for buying hygiene products that are a need other than a luxury item. The taxes a woman pays on a month at average are $7. In several years a woman paying this amount of taxes, adds up to 20 million dollars. For example, when men go the store to buy a single razor they get charged 75 cents and women get charged $1. 08. Even with children there is the same conflict, a mother going shopping for school clothes would pay $4. 36 for his little boy polo and 86 cents more for her girl’s polo. Women buying clothes or any item with color pink involved gets tax based on gender.
A New York’s department of consumer affairs presented how home health care products for women are 8% higher that males and personal care products are 13% more expensive than men. This is even recognized and is being called the “pink tax, ” bringing a sense of sexism to our country. On the other hand, our society is based on men getting paid more and their patriarchal ways of thinking. They believe they should be the dominant one and in many cases are so. In 2016, the gender gap was based on how our country would distribute their income to women and men. Based on this data women gets paid 80. 5% less than men and in 29 states they have a gender pay gap larger than their national average conferring to Shyanne Gal statistics.
Also race has a bit to do with it. Hispanic and black women get an average of 60% of their earnings compared to a white man who gets 100% of it. In some jobs women even get paid less than men while performing the same abilities. A registered nurse career requires both genders the same time and same requisites, but when it comes to the income women get 2% less than men. As well as a woman working as a software developer, she would get paid 4% less while performing the identical job a man would do. Comparing genders in jobs we have already seen how men have it easy for being men. So why not let them pay the same amount of taxes with that extra percent they are being paid more than women?
In Suzan Pharr article, she introduces us to the idea of sexism. Women are extremely affected by the gender roles judgements around our world. The U. S is the country that their income distribution is paid unfairly. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Pharr even provides us with statistics showing us how the 5% of rich people who are mainly men increased to 22. 4% of income and how there 33 million poor people who probably includes many women. The income is not equally distributed and therefore men should pay more taxes, since they are the getting paid a bigger amount than what women would pay. Men are always seen as the “man in the house” or the “dominant one, ” but when it comes to paying taxes they automatically don’t agree paying a little bit more? If men are earning way more money than women, then the “pink tax “being implemented should also include a “blue tax, ” making men pay the same amount of taxes women pay. America is always seen as the country of opportunities and equality for both genders, but men are always taking the advantage.
To conclude, since 1995, cities like California and New York have banned gender-based discrimination, so why not just ban it or start making men pay more taxes for their necessities to.
