National Right to Life was founded in 1968 as the first nationwide right to life group. Carlo Tobias, National Right to Life President, said that the abortion issue played a major role in every election since Ronald Reagan was elected as a president in 1980. He said that the National Right to Life’s network and locals helped to provide the margin of victory for pro-life candidates in election after election. The polls says that the voters were very much influenced by the right to life slogan. 28% of voters said that they have received/ heard/saw the ads of National Rights to Life. 17% recalled that they have received/heard the message, 9% recalled that they have heard/ received the information about candidates from Susan B. Anthony’s list, 10% recalled that they have heard/saw the information from American United for Life. This shows the political impact of National Right to life. One of the legislations involved by the National Right for Life is Conscience Protection Act. Urging the U.S house to vote on banning state abortion mandates. This Conscience Protection Act prohibits any level of government from directing that health care providers participate in abortion. It would protect the doctors and nurses and also hospitals and health plans. It also provides for people who are affected by abortion gives a chance to file “private law suits” in federal courts. It has involved in the litigation in ensuring women’s reproductive rights.
National Right to Life’s mission is “to protect and defend the most fundamental right of humankind, the right to life”. The right to life of every person from the beginning of life to his/her natural death. In other words, promoting respect for every individual born or unborn. It includes unborn children from their beginning, newly born children, people with disabilities, old people, and other types of people who cannot defend themselves. Other areas of concern also include members who are threatened by abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, and assisted suicide. This organization works to achieve its mission via education, legislation and political action. They include activities such as providing research/ educational materials, information and leadership training for right to life citizenship, sponsoring legislation which helps in advancing the protection of public life, and helping the election of public officials who defend life. With a nation-wide network of 50 affiliated state groups, 3,000 of community chapters, and millions of individual supporters all across the country who act on the information they receive from them. The strength of National Right to Life is derivative of their broad base of diverse and dedicated people who are united to focus on one issue and of course the right to life itself.
