The Role of Good Manners in The Society

The thesis statement, “Good manners make our society work,” is not a strong thesis statement. Strong thesis statements are typically things that can be tested in some way (Duxbury, 2008). For one, it is difficult to test out the impact of manners. This is also true because the author of the thesis statement did not create a specific definition of manners.

Good is a subjective term. People may vary tremendously on their opinion of what constitutes good manners. In addition, the later portion of the thesis is also vague. It does not explain what aspects of society the author is referring to. A better thesis statement would be more specific, and would establish a proposed relationship between manners in social interactions and the impact they have on society.

No, something is not merely right just because many different people accept it. In past societies, some practices were commonly accepted by the majority of people. For example, the majority of people thought that the earth was flat until evidence proved otherwise. Science is different because the principles of good science are rooted in examining evidence before coming to a conclusion. The amount of evidence available for some topics is lower than that for others.

In addition, scientists make a habit of providing evidence and a rationale for their conclusions. Even people with no scientific background can understand the logic behind a particular claim if they read through all of the details provided by the scientist. Some other things in society are believed by many people on the basis of their appeal, rather than on the basis of evidence or testing.
