Connecting with people on the other side of the world is so much better than it was a long time ago. One of the developing countries that has a significant effect on globalization is the Philippines. As people evolve and as time passes by, due to globalization, people from different countries become more collaborative and interconnected. Today, the interdependence of people can be manifested in so many ways by globalization.

The world economy has experienced at least three waves of globalization; the fourth wave is on-going, sweeping away old certainties are being overturned. The Philippines, which has so far been enjoying the growth dividend from the third wave of globalization, as a result of a functional democracy, monetary stability, trade liberalization and related market reforms. By way of globalization, people around the world exchange knowledge as well as goods and services. The globalization in the Philippines has been very effective. Significant changes in the economy have taken place since 1995, this is when the Philippines signed agreements with the World Trade Organization. There have been a lot of effects on different sectors such as politics, economy, human rights, culture, religion, health and medicine, and education because of globalization.

The impact of global economy on developing countries like Philippines is far greater than it is to developed countries. Evidence indicates that globalization has a positive impact on economic growth and employment in the country. When former President Benigno Aquino III delivered his last State of the Nation Address (SONA) in 2015, he depicted the Philippine economy as one of Asia’s best. The former President noted that the Philippines posted an average growth of 6.2 percent in gross domestic product (GDP) from 2010 to 2014, the fastest period of economic growth recorded in the past 40 years. This is because the Philippines major export is labor. Globalization produced hundreds of job opportunities in many different sectors. The creation of meaningful employment opportunities is therefore necessary for poverty reduction and sustainable economic and social growth.

Culture, as a way of life shared by a certain community of people in a society, has developed a specific identity as British, Chinese or Filipino. Today, however, culture has become the field of controversy on the issue of globalization. The impacts of globalization are vast and varied in our own society. Language is one of the most critical elements of globalization. Without it, there would be no simple contact between peoples and cultures. There are numerous languages spoken all over the world. Sometimes, these languages create a barrier when you communicate with someone else. At other times, a person can be judge on the basis of his accent or language. Through globalization, [Tagalog-based Filipino, which is the national language of the Philippines, is used extensively alongside English in schools. Also, the use of English is one of the most noticeable effects of globalization on our society. Although English is important for us to compete globally, it has undervalued our native languages. And it has become a requirement for all those who pursue a higher position in society. Nowadays, our language is changing because of what globalization brought.

The world has shrunk with the advancement of technology and even more with social media. Globalization boosts technological development; it allows countries to gain easier access to foreign knowledge. By the means of technology different sectors such as religion, health and medicine, and education is clearly affected. During this time of Covid-19 pandemic one of the most affected sectors is the education because of the new normal learning modalities which is the blended learning that includes modular activities, television-based, radio-based instruction, and online class. The use of technology in this normal in combating this new normal in the education system plays an important role. As a student who experiencing this kind of learning, I might say that technology helps us to have access to an information and to acquire knowledge without having any struggles. Through modern technology it gives us an opportunity to learn and not waste time despite of this pandemic. Also, in response of globalization the country adopt a new curriculum which is K-12 program that aims to enhance student’s skill, produce more competent citizens and prepare graduates for lifelong learning employment. Thus, globalization in education may end up creating more legitimate opportunities for a few advanced countries for a new form of colonization of developing countries.

Globalization introduces a culture of pluralism, meaning that religions ‘with conflicting yet distinctive ethics and desires’ connect with one another. Fundamentally, world-leading religious traditions — Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam — teach ideals such as human dignity, equality, democracy, unity, and solidarity. Religion has benefited greatly from technological advances. For example, websites provide any person with information and explanations about various religions, regardless of their geographical location, as well as the ability to contact others around the world and hold discussions that allow religious ideas to spread. In addition, television allows for the provision of religious visual teachings and activities on religious networks. Thus, by making a leap on the knowledge superhighway that brings religious teachings to every home and monitors in a global environment, religions have come together in one framework. In short, globalization enables religions that were historically separated from one another to have frequent and inevitable contact. As a consequence, globalization emphasizes the fact that because religions have common beliefs, not one of them is ‘right’ and can therefore be modified.

The effect of globalization on health systems and individual is complex. During this pandemic we are experiencing the impacts of globalization in a various way. First, we are all waiting for the Covid-19 vaccine made by other countries such as China, USA, UK, Germany and Russia. Developing countries like Philippines are just waiting for the vaccine made by other country and that is globalization. Also, testing kit is made from other country. Travelling to another country for medical treatment is also part of globalization. The health community must participate more explicitly in current research and policy discussions on globalization and promote principles that promote human health. At the same time, those at the helm of globalization processes must understand that health effects can improve the long-term sustainability of globalization.

Lastly, globalization has led the Philippine Government to introduce and enact legislation that is identical to those applied overseas. One of most eminent influence of globalization in the Philippine government that is also related to education is the legislation of the Republic Act No. 10533 or the “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013”. This law promulgates the addition of two years in Basic Education, which are Grades 11 and 12, respectively, thereby replicating the educational systems of other nearby countries. It is said to be legislated particularly to harmonize the educational systems existing among ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states. Another proposed legislation is the divorce bill or House Bill No. 7303. This bill has continued to baffle millions of family-oriented Filipinos, mainly because of the belief that the legislation on divorce and related practices of dissolution of marriage would undermine family relations, hence the ongoing debate between the Filipinos and the government itself.

To sum it up, globalization is a very visible phenomenon currently, it turned the entire globe into a single market in terms of its religion, culture, language and diversity. It also contributes to an rise in demand for products, which in turn calls for further production and industrialization. Above all, it is a great blessing to trade because it brings a lot of economic and social benefits to a country especially to the developing ones like Philippines.
