Marijuana is a plant whose chemical components are used in the medical field as well as recreation purposes, but further studies have shown the dangerous effects of the drug on consumers. This essay unfolds to discuss the use of marijuana medically, further divulging into paragraphs based on the negative long term effects of the drug on consumers and finally giving recommendations on drug consumption. Numerous medical drugs are obtained from natural sources, such as relaxants. Marijuana contains relaxant chemicals, which consumers claim are effective in calming their stress and anxiety after using the drug (Cox. L. 2017, accessed October 2 2018). Although the time for the effect to occur depends on the method of consumption, the final results are similar but also depend on the consumer’s emotions and mood at the time of usage.

However, there are a number of side effects that drugs such as marijuana have on consumers. Recent studies of marijuana has shown an increase of the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) chemical from 1% to 13% between the years 1972 and 2010 in the drug. This chemical stimulates the brain affecting normal processes such as memory function, a person’s learning abilities, concentration becoming difficult, talking and movement. The brain becomes unstable, sometimes resulting in scattered emotions due to hallucinations and paranoia. After a ‘high’, consumers are likely to feel more depressed than before consumption, thus upon addiction the brain becomes more damaged leaving a person in a dangerous state of mind which could result in users harming themselves or their surroundings.

Furthermore, marijuana affects all the organs of the body including the heart. The abuse of such powerful drugs for a short span of happy feelings has dangerous consequences. One of which is the increase of the heartbeat rate which leads to higher than normal blood pressure in the body. Blood is carried by blood vessels which could burst due to high pressures or could also become damage with direct injection of the drug into the bloodstream. Directly injecting drugs can cause infections of the heart as stated by DeCapua (2015, accessed 1 October 2018), leading to cancer and a very painful death or an instant one due to high blood pressure causing heart attacks.

Additionally, all organs are vital for the survival of a person, the most hardworking organ in the human body is the liver. Its main function is to filter toxins from the blood. However with the constant use and increase of dosage of drugs in the blood the liver becomes overworked and filled with poisonous substances causing the liver to slowly degrade and become a danger itself to the body. On such circumstances the liver has to be removed surgically leaving the body susceptible to effects of toxic products even from simple prescribed drugs. The liver also performs various chemical processes that are vital for the body, thus with the removal of this organ the body will have difficulties in coping without the toxin filter and chemical producer. Therefore, to avoid the long term dangerous effects that could occur with the constant and abusive use of powerful drugs it is better to seek professional medical help and receive proper prescription that should be strictly followed. Moreover, teenagers should be strictly monitored with their use of drugs as stated by Cox (2017, accessed October 2018) the consequences on their brain development is much more significant than in adults. Teenagers have further to go in comparison to adults and early addiction to drugs could pose destructive for their future. Addictive medical drugs should be used with proper subscription and strictly monitored to prevent abuse of drugs, leading to addiction thus more damage than good.

Conclusively, marijuana and other similar drugs can be said to cause more damage than good. Major organs such as the brain, the heart and the liver, in the body are damaged. The brain is rendered useless due to its instability resulting from drug infatuation leaving a person dangerous to themselves or surroundings. The heart could suffer infections and result in cancer or instant death with heart attacks. The liver may be removed and leave the body easily affected by toxins ingested. The most vulnerable age group are the teenagers due to their proper brain development being obstructed. Drugs should be used under prescription and advice from medical professionals.
