The temple was the center of religious life in the Greek City-State of Athens. It was built in the mid-5th century BCE. Parthenon was a symbol of the wealth, power and high culture of Athens.
Architecture
Building of the temple began with the architects Ictinus and Callicrates and with the sculptor Phidias. In 438 BC, the statue of Athena, made by Phidias for the interior, was dedicated. It was the only piece of sculpture from the Parthenon, however the statue no longer exists.
