Moral always been discussed and it is never-ending topic to talk about. Many people had different point of view and it’s hard to point out who is right and wrong. Why is it important to keep promises? This essay explores this question through the concept of morality as promises are a fundamental part of our social fabric. They are the building blocks of trust and integrity in our personal and professional relationships. When we make a promise, we are creating a commitment to do something, and failing to keep that promise can have serious consequences. The hardest things about moral is the principle of right and wrong, what’s the right things to do for certain scenario and why it was the right things to do and not otherwise. Moral principle determine what is good and right or ethical way for human to behave. It is principle that we follow in order tell the different between right and wrong, for example, when and why the one should keep promises or not.

First and foremost, keeping promises is essential for building trust. When we make a promise, we are essentially telling the other person that we will do something, and they are putting their trust in us to follow through. If we fail to keep that promise, we are breaking that trust and damaging the relationship. On the other hand, when we keep our promises, we build trust and strengthen the relationship. In addition, keeping promises is important for maintaining our reputation and credibility. If we make a promise and fail to keep it, others may begin to view us as unreliable or untrustworthy. This can have serious consequences in both our personal and professional lives, as it can impact our ability to form new relationships and maintain existing ones. Furthermore, keeping promises demonstrates our commitment and accountability. When we make a promise, we are essentially taking ownership of a task or responsibility. By following through on that promise, we are demonstrating our commitment to that task and our accountability for the outcome. This can have a positive impact on our professional reputation and can lead to increased opportunities for growth and advancement.

Thomas Hobbes, English philosopher argued that in civil society everyone should be disposed to keep agreements, hence a foundation of co-operative society, where morality equals one’s ability to keep established agreement. For example, if you help your friend buying Nasi Lemak and he assures that he is going to pay you back the food that you had bought him and he never does, he basically using you for his own benefits. Hobbes was aware that there is this problem as well. Hobbes presented an argument of “the Foole”, who explicitly claims that to comply with an established agreement is irrational. As you can see, your friend gained a large benefit by having you help him, but he never moved a finger for you. So, you could say that his action was more beneficial to him than returning the favour to you. In fact, one could say that returning the favour would be irrational, in that case morality (in sense of keeping promises) is irrational as well. Why even keep promises and so act so morally, if such actions turn out to be less beneficial to you than exploiting?

To defeat the Foole, if the person never kept his promises or agreement, he would be kicked from the society, because who want to be exploited by the same person all repeatedly. If the person want to stay in co-operative society at all, which brings many benefits, especially security, then you should not be exploiting anyone, but keep promises which you can keep.

To live in a society, having moral is a must as it is standard guidelines of behaviour for people to live in a group. Moral also refer to what society as right and acceptable. When we make a promise, we are making a commitment to someone else. Failing to keep that promise can have serious consequences for that person and can lead to disappointment, frustration, and even harm. By keeping our promises, we are demonstrating our respect and consideration for others and our commitment to doing the right thing.

In conclusion, keeping promises is essential for building trust, maintaining our reputation, demonstrating our commitment and accountability, and doing the right thing. While it may be tempting to make promises that we are not sure we can keep, the benefits of keeping our promises far outweigh the potential consequences of breaking them. By keeping our promises, we can build strong and meaningful relationships and live a life of integrity and accountability.
