One of my goals is to obtain my bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. My father was a mechanical engineer and was well known for his numerous achievements. His success in the field was largely due to his travels to various countries, which allowed him to explore different ways of thinking and approaches to engineering. Sadly, my father passed away during my senior year. When I decided to follow in his footsteps, I knew that I had big shoes to fill. The Denmark study abroad program will help me learn more about engineering and the ways in which engineering differs from the United States.
The program involves studying renewable energy in Denmark. Renewable energy has always intrigued me, particularly because I come from Honduras, a country that relies solely on nonrenewable energy sources, which have become scarce, leading to energy rationing. I am eager to learn more about renewable energy and its potential impact on a country. I understand that the widespread adoption of renewable energy can reduce electricity costs in the future and help stabilize prices. However, the initial investment in building a renewable energy facility can be substantial. By attending this program, I hope to gain insights into the requirements for developing a renewable energy field and explore the feasibility of introducing renewable energy to a third-world country.
I chose this program because renewable energy encompasses aspects of environmental, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and even agricultural engineering, providing me with a comprehensive understanding of the engineering field. Denmark is an ideal choice because it is a global leader in renewable energy and has made significant advancements in engineering and technology. I aspire to gain a deeper understanding of Denmark's engineering prowess. My father's success stemmed from his exposure to diverse perspectives and advanced methodologies in mechanical engineering during his international travels. Coming from a third-world country, attending this program will positively impact my career, as I can introduce innovative engineering solutions based on what I learn. I never considered studying abroad due to my background, but now I see the immense value it offers.
One of the many challenges I faced when considering studying abroad was financing the trip. After my father's passing, our financial situation changed, and I was uncertain about my ability to further my education. It wasn't until I moved back to the U.S. that I realized the multitude of opportunities available to me. When I first heard of the Denmark program, I didn't consider the possibility of attending. However, after conducting further research and consulting with advisors, I discovered scholarship opportunities to finance the trip. Initially, I hesitated to apply, thinking that other students might be more deserving. Yet, I realized that to achieve my goals, I must overcome my fears and persist because it is better to try and know than to be left wondering what could have been (Smith, 2022).
Overall, studying abroad will make a significant difference in my career by providing me with a fresh perspective on Denmark. One unique aspect of the study abroad program is staying with a host family, which will deepen my understanding of Danish culture and how it differs from my own. Studying abroad will not only enhance my knowledge of engineering but also broaden my horizons and enrich my experiences. With the Gilman Scholarship, I hope to have the opportunity to study abroad and seize new opportunities that will positively impact my future (Johnson, 2021).
