In fact, the literacy rate in India as of 2015 (15 years+, both sexes) was 72.1%, which means that there a illiteracy gap of 27.9%, compared with China , which is the only country that overpasses India in population, India has 24.3% more illiterates than China. In fact if we compare the literacy rate of India with that of the top five most populated countries in the world, with the exception of the USA, since I wasn’t able to find information on its literacy rates for the year 2015, we get the next results.

All of these countries combined contain 42.02% of the world population. Comparing the literacy rates, we find that India has the second lowest, after Pakistan. The position that India occupies in this category is due to the lack of infrastructure and government facilities to provide literacy, of course these facilities must be accessible for any individual in order to be efficient and pull up the number of literate people in the world. In the paragraph above, I mentioned that literacy is often wrongly linked with education, which does not mean that they are not associated. Literacy is the first step into education, and for this reason it is so crucial that the Indian government take advantage of the growing GDP in order to fix this issue. Education sustains societies and economies, in fact, it is the power cell of the world, by increasing the government spending in education, the government is assuring a more prepared and developed society, their increase in gross domestic product is a remarkable opportunity to invest in their country, an investment that will surely be repaid in the future, by more skilled workers that will be able to be hired in better jobs or even create more job opportunity’s by starting up their own business.

All of this process will once again benefit the economy and the lower class population, since those individuals will also take advantage and gradually be promoted to higher classes, and thus reducing poverty, another massive issue in India that needs to be corrected. There is a considerable time gap between putting the measures into practice and actually correcting the issue. If the government invests on education, which is the measure, they are not going to abolish poverty in the near future, but it is a long term solution. When asked about India, most people’s first thought would be poverty and disaster, but they are not to be blamed for that, the Indian population live under inhuman conditions, 21.9% lives below the national poverty line and 17.9% live on less than 1.9$ per day. Unfortunately these conditions have unfavorable effects on the society, and simultaneously on the economy. Poverty promotes vandalism, crime and disorder, which at the same time repulses investment. This occurs because every single individual in a society needs money for maintenance and to preserve a minimum living standard, without education, those individuals are forced to find new sources of income, which is another reason for government to assure that education centers will be easily accessible by everyone. However, this is not actually taking place in the country; India has a total of 1,425,564 educational institutions around the country (excluding higher education).

37,2% of India’s population is below the age of 19, working out the percentage out of the total ( 1,342,512,705) we get a result of 499,414,726 individuals who are in the appropriate age to attend school ( up to grade XII). If we divide that figure by the total number of institutions, the ratio is 350 students per facility, which is a reasonable number for secondary education, but it is an immense number for primary schools.
On the other hand, there is another measure to estimate the amount of children that attend school, the enrolment ratio. This measure the number of students enrolled in a specific level of education, expressed as a percentage of the official school-age population corresponding to that level of education. With this ratio, there are two main aspects that may be interesting to analyze.
