In Luke Durward’s Ted Talk, he proceeds to talk about a time in college that caused an impact on his little eleven year old brother. To lay the foundation, Luke is an undergraduate kinesiology student. With this being said, he has a passion and knowledge on the importance of nutrition. As Luke was getting to class, he slipped on some ice and caused him to break his leg. He was forced upon his own will to go home and do his studies there. Luke noticed something strange about his “little” brother, he was eating as if he was an adult, which would later lead to obesity if he did not control himself. This was where Luke developed a strategy for healthier eating habits. He basically got rid of all junk food in his house and replaced it with more nutritiousness choices. It may seem unbelievably too good to be true, but it worked effectively because if there is no junk food in the house, Luke’s little brother wouldn’t be tempted to devour some. Luke was motivated to develop this strategy because as he was incapable of doing much activity due to his injury, that allowed him to put more focus on his little brother’s well being. It would be practical for a college student, whether they’re living in a dorm or not, to adopt a similar strategy because if they’re eating healthy, that will allow them to feel good about themselves and obtain a positive mindset while going to school.
At the end of my senior year of high school, I compared all of my ID pictures and noticed a facial change over the years. My face was getting chubbier and chubbier, picture after picture. I certainly did not find that aspect wholesome, so I made a drastic change over the summer. I adopted my own healthy eating strategy and have stuck through it upon until today. My strategy is that I could only eat medium portions of food twice a day at specific times during the day, and if I were ever to get hungry in between those time periods, I would just drink water. Of course it was difficult the first two weeks, but after I noticed weight loss, that only motivated me to keep pushing and implement workouts into my schedule. At the end of summer, I lost a total of forty pounds and it certainly isn’t going to stop there. This strategy has helped me obtain a positive mindset, and it has helped me survive the first few weeks as a college freshman.
Luke Durvard’s speech of “How to Make Healthy Eating Unbelievably Easy” makes a valid point on the importance of eating well. It’s not rocket science, if you eat good, you will feel good which will serve as a helping factor to help you accomplish your goals. In my scenario, it was the ability to reach weight loss, which I have accomplished and will set new goals to grasp on. We all need to adopt our own strategies because having a healthy body and mindset is the first step to achieving success.
